Our research

The immune system is composed of several types of myeloid and lymphoid white blood cells collectively protecting the body from different pathogens and from the growth of cancer cells.

All cells in the immune system are produced from blood stem cells. This process involves several differentiation stages that are driven and controlled by a network of regulatory pathways.

The lymphoid cells include: T (thymus-dependent), B (bone marrow-derived) and NK (natural killer) cells. NK cells play critical role in protection against infectious pathogens and in preventing cancer, and activate the function of the other cells of the immune system.

NK cell-deficiencies correlate with higher cancer incidence and increased infections. NK cell-based therapies have been used in the clinic to treat cancer patients. In contrast to T and B cells, the origin of NK cells is not well defined.

The overall aim of our work is to establish a NK cell developmental map and identify critical NK lineage regulators. We are also studying how cancer cells escape NK cell surveillance and how NK cell development and function is altered in leukemia.

This new knowledge will help to better understand blood diseases (immune-deficiencies and leukemia), and to improve therapy against cancer and infections.
